The UN Security Council will consider response measures against North Korea (DPRK) for the launches of ballistic missiles it carried out this week in violation of the existing Security Council resolutions, Luxembourg’s ambassador to the United Nations Sylvie Lucas who is the Security Council president in March, said on Thursday.

“The Security Council members have condemned the launch that has violated the SC resolutions and agreed to consider the due response measures,” the diplomat said after an opening meeting of the Security Council. She did not specify which measures might be taken against the DPRK. According to Lucas, it will be clarified in the coming days.

However, Lucas’ remarks cannot be considered a formal statement of the UN Security Council and are, in essence, a brief retelling of a Council meeting that was held behind closed doors. ITAR-TASS has learned that the United States that called the meeting expected to adopt a SC statement for the press, however, the Council members failed to agree on the text.

North Korea on Wednesday carried out two ballistic missile tests in the Sea of Japan (East Sea) area. According to the South Korean military sources, the medium-range missiles of the Rodong type, launched with an interval of 10 minutes from the area of Sukchon north of Pyongyang flew about 650 kilometres. North Korea’s first over the past five years launches of the Rodong missiles were carried out on the eve of the largest ever joint military manoeuvres of the United States and South Korea - Foal Eagle.
