Sheikh Fahad Al Salem Al Ali Al Sabah, President of the Center for Dialogue among Civilizations and former Minister for Agriculture in Kuwait, has decided to involve himself in the active promotion of human rights and public liberties in order to fight against extremism's expansion all over the world. On the occasion on the 20th anniversary of the liberation of Kuwait, the Sheikh, who is one of the best witnesses of what occurs in 1990 as he was taken as a prisoner of war by Iraq from November of 1990 till his release in June of 1991, announces the launch of an important project for peace improvement. This project, already supported by key former and emblematic political leaders and prestigious international foundations, is especially topical regarding recent demonstrations in North Africa and the willingness for freedom and public liberties among those populations.
Ignorance is one of the major threats for peace. Therefore, the main issue nowadays is to improve mass education and people's knowledge so as to enhance tolerance and respect. To achieve this goal, creating cultural bridges is strategic in order to overturn constant brainwashing of populations orchestrated by extremists. Spreading beyond frontiers, media and new technologies are the best weapons to overcome this plague for democracies over the next decades. This technological revolution has to be used in favor of peace and, hopefully, to pacify relationships and to improve mutual understanding between people.
Thus, Sheikh Fahad Al Salem Al Ali Al Sabah decided to use his own experience in the media field and all means he has to serve this cause and fully contribute to open-mindedness and tolerance improvement. The project is to set up an international satellite TV channels network in 2012 dedicated to build bridges between civilizations so as to permit greater dialogue between worlds, culture and religions.
The ambition is to get an innovative approach through the use of "citizen journalism" and collective contribution to the channels' content based on new technologies such as mobile phones allowing everyone to broadcast news. People will be given the power to dialogue and voice their thoughts from all around the world. New media will clearly constitute a core basis of the project in order to liberate collective energy and give complete freedom of speech to citizens, too often muzzled, who will easily join millions of other "reporters" of day-to-day life and peace information.
From an operational standpoint, broadcast infrastructure already exists in Kuwait through the City of Media (100% privately owned) which is a new and modern area partly dedicated to the project. The City of Media integrates all the technologies needed to quickly broadcast new networks through satellite.
Several international emblematic political leaders have already joined the project in a wide and common effort for peace. The collective approach and the willingness to associate witted intellectuals and political leaders are aimed at specifying and conceiving a better project thanks to the confrontation of experience and visions through written contributions.
Biography for Sheikh Fahad Al Salem Al Ali Al Sabah
Sheikh Fahad is a humanitarian that believes in and actively pursues evolving the rights of Arab Citizens and ensuring that more justice and less inequality is afforded to all, whether in the Arab World or throughout the globe. Sheikh Fahad held several high-ranking positions after being taken as a prisoner of war by Iraq from November of 1990 till his release in June of 1991.
Sheikh Fahad was elected to the Board of Directors of the Commercial Bank of Kuwait. He further moved to the National Guard and held several positions including the Assistant Undersecretary for Information Technology and Services. During his tenure he created and executed several programs including computer literacy and setting up the fiber optic infrastructure for the National Guard.
After being awarded the Directorship of the Public Authority of Agriculture Affairs and Fisheries, a ministerial position, by a Decree from the Ruling Prince of Kuwait, Sheikh Fahad reorganized the administrative structure by sending employees on training missions, establishing modern testing laboratories and entering into agricultural agreements with several countries to support both Kuwait's and the other countries needs, accordingly.
