Doctors may face off in Qld poll battle

Queensland is looking interstate to replace any doctors who resign over new contracts. The dispute between public doctors and the Queensland government has prompted a prominent Brisbane surgeon to seek Labor preselection ahead of next year's state election.

Maxillofacial surgeon Anthony Lynham will seek preselection in the seat of Stafford, held by Assistant Health Minister Chris Davis.

Dr Davis, a former Australian Medical Association boss, holds the seat with a 7.1 per cent margin.

A Labor spokesman told AAP that Dr Lynham put his hand up for the seat because he's sick of the government's rows with the judiciary and its failure to cut trading hours to curb alcohol-fuelled violence.

But he also wants to run because of the long-running doctor contracts dispute.

Some doctors and unions claim new contracts will strip employment protections and potentially compromise patient care.

Dr Davis sided with doctors a month ago and threatened to resign if public safety was compromised.
